How to Survive NaNoWriMo in 2018 17 Top Tips for Success
How to Survive NaNoWriMo in 2018 17 Top Tips for Success How to Survive NaNoWriMo in 2018: 17 Top Tips for Success You might not like to hear this. But NaNoWriMo can often take a toll on you mentally and even creatively. It might not make sense to you now, but youââ¬â¢ll understand just how much NaNoWriMo can affect you in a little bit.First, letââ¬â¢s talk about what makes NaNoWriMo unique and special. What is NaNoWriMo?NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month.Itââ¬â¢s an event that takes place over the course of November where writers from all over commit to writing 50,000 words during the month. Thatââ¬â¢s the main goal and if you accomplish this, thatââ¬â¢s how you WIN NaNoWriMo.So unfortunately, no, NaNoWriMo not some sort of nanobotthat you can implant in your mind to write your book for you.The entire point is to help writers have a month of very high productivity so they can get the first draft out of the way in order to pave the way for editing, rewriting, and overall polishing. What can take writers months to accomplish (50,000 words) only needs to take one so the book gets finished faster. Here are your daily, weekly, and total goals for NaNoWriMo. If youre someone who likes to work on a weekly basis instead of a daily, this will help you.How to Prepare for NaNoWriMoOne of the best things you can do if you want to win NaNoWriMo is to prepare properly. Thereââ¬â¢s a reason those who participate dub October as Preptober. Here are a few things you can do to make sure youââ¬â¢re ready when NaNoWriMo comes to town.#1 Download your survival guide! When it comes to making it through NaNoWriMo, you might need help. If youââ¬â¢re anything like me, you might have tons of book ideas bouncing around inside your head.So how do you choose which to write and which to save for later? Here are a few questions I like to ask myself when deciding which story to try first:Which do you think about the most?Which is developed the most?Which one is a book youââ¬â¢d be most likely to pick up and read yourself?Which one have you been thinking of as you read these questions?Chances are, thereââ¬â¢s one idea that stands out to you above all the rest. Even if the others are good, the story youââ¬â¢re most connected to and think about the most is the one youââ¬â¢ll actually enjoy writing the most. And since youââ¬â¢ll be spending a great deal of time on this book over the next month, actually enjoying it is very important.Pick the one that has your passion and run with it.#3 OUTLINEIââ¬â¢m a personal advocate of outlining. My outlines are very detailed and I want to basically have an instruction manual for my book. That being said, itââ¬â¢s understandable that not everyone works well with an outline. Maybe itââ¬â¢s not for you. However, going into NaNoWriMo completely blind is a mistake. You at least want to have an overview of the plot and the major plot points figured out so you have a direction in which to write. For those of you who need outlining, make sure itââ¬â¢s done before November starts! That clear, step-by-step overview of your book will be extremely helpful for saving time. Youââ¬â¢ll be able to sit down and get to writing instead of spending so much time trying to figure out where your story is going.#4 Join support groupsGoing through something as arduous as NaNoWriMo requires some backuppreferably in the form of friends or just other people participating as well. You all know that itââ¬â¢s going to be hard and therefore, you can count on sup port groups to help propel you through the tough times.Support groups are your best bet to stay motivated throughout the entire month. Plus, anyone whoââ¬â¢s a part of those groups is usually more than willing to help when you get stuck on your story, too.So where do you find groups like these? You can follow specific hashtags or accounts on Twitter, or you can join Facebook groups dedicated to NaNoWriMo.Here are a few Facebook groups you can join right now to help you make it through:Official NaNoWriMo PageNaNoWriMoNaNoWriMo 20182018 NaNoWriMo Support Encouragement#5 Get in the right mindsetThe reason NaNoWriMo is so difficult isnââ¬â¢t because of the fact that youââ¬â¢re writing a book; itââ¬â¢s because youââ¬â¢re writing so much of your book in such a short amount of time. Itââ¬â¢s scary. And that can be intimidating to a number of people most of us, Iââ¬â¢d wager to bet. That means one of your biggest obstacles isnââ¬â¢t plotting your novel or making sure youââ¬â¢re physically prepared, itââ¬â¢s making sure youââ¬â¢re mentally ready to complete such a tough goal. That means focusing on your inspiration, motivation, and staying positive! You can find other methods of maintaining the right mindset in our NaNoWriMo survival guide.#6 Schedule your writing time This is one of the absolute best ways to ensure you actually make it through NaNoWriMo in one piece and even win!Itââ¬â¢s as simple as making a schedule for yourself and then sticking to it.Anyone can mark their days to write on a calendar but it takes a special kind of writer to sit down daily and hit those word count goals. We actually put together a progress tracking and planning spreadsheet that calculates your percentage completed in our NaNoWriMo survival guide! You can find what that looks like below. You can use this all year round, not just in November. Give it a download if you want to make some real progress this month.NaNoWriMo-Winning HabitsBeing able to win NaNoWriMo is the entire goal of entering. You want to complete 50,000 words in a single month. But thatââ¬â¢s much easier said than done.I decided to pull out the big guns and ask for some help from my personal Twitter followers since I know many of them participate in this yearly.I tweeted out asking for help, and they did NOT disappoint.I NEED YOUR HELP: #Nanowrimo writers, what are some of your tips for surviving the month of November to win NaNoWriMo? Im putting together a blog post for @self_pub_school and need your help.Whether you won or have not yet completed it, I still want your help!- Bella Rose Pope (@BellaRosePope) October 15, 2018Here are some of the tips I received on the thread of this tweet along with some extended tips to help you make the most of NaNoWriMo this month.#1 Pick a daily word count and focus on hitting that onlyWhen you think about the overall goal of writing 50,000, you might begin to sweat, get anxious, and even feel discouraged.Because it is a lot of words to write in a single month. But one of the biggest tips experienced NaNoWriMo-ers have for anyone venturing to accomplish such an audacious goal is to only focus on hitting your daily goal.So instead of thinking about it as 50,000 words a month, think of it as 1667 words a day. This helps your mind process the amount better so you donââ¬â¢t get so overwhelmed.#2 Put together writing playlistsInspiration doesnââ¬â¢t just exactly come around whenever you want it to. Sometimes it hides away like you might when winter comes around (just me?).But the thing is, if every writer waited for inspiration to find them in order to write, hardly any of us would get our books done and weââ¬â¢d definitely not make it through NaNoWriMo with 50,000 words accomplished. So instead, you might have to coax inspiration from the outskirts of your mind and one way many writers do this is through music.Create a playlist that fits with the style of your story and turn it on whenever you s it down to write. It can serve as inspiration and a mental cue for your mind to get ready to work.#3 Have writing motivation and inspiration handyJust like I mentioned above, you wonââ¬â¢t always want to write but in order to hit your goal for November, you need to write daily (unless you want to sit and write huge chunks of words a couple days a week). When you keep visuals, quotes, and even other novels that have inspired your own writing journey handy, itââ¬â¢s much easier to get in the mood to crank out some high-quality words.#4 Commit to NOT editing at allThis is one of the hardest parts for many whoââ¬â¢ve done NaNoWriMo before. They can get the words down, but only if they donââ¬â¢t stop to edit as they go.Your first draft is better done than perfect, which is the entire point of NaNoWriMo in the first place. So put the editor part of your mind on hold and let your writer-brain take full ownership over the next month.#5 Ask friends/family to leave you aloneI rea lize this might sound harsh but NaNoWriMo is a commitment. You canââ¬â¢t have friends and family bugging you when itââ¬â¢s your designated writing time.In order to succeed with NaNoWriMo, itââ¬â¢s best to make it clear to everyone around you that youââ¬â¢ll be unreachable for a specific amount of time whenever you write. If you set that expectation early on and be stern about it, itââ¬â¢ll be easier to avoid this type of distraction throughout the month.#6 Recruit a close accountability partnerIf writing groups donââ¬â¢t work for you because your posts get lost in the mix, pairing up with someone for one-on-one accountability might be a better option for you.You can check-in daily and give each other support and encouragement when it gets tough. And trust me, by the second week, youââ¬â¢ll need someone there to push you along and remind you why you started this lofty task in the first place.#7 Use a distraction-free writing appThere are a ton of writing software and apps out there designed to help you write and write faster. One of the best to use is an app called Freedom. What this app does is cut off access to certain websites or apps for a determined amount of time. Whenever you try to visit those sites (like Twitter) during the time you have scheduled to write, youââ¬â¢ll receive this message:This prevents you from procrastinating or getting too distracted, which hinders your word count progress. The idea here is that this app ââ¬Å"freesâ⬠you from the addiction and distraction of sites you know you get sucked into easily.#8 Turn your notifications offThis is for your phone, social media, email, and any other notifications that might pop up during your writing time.If you use the app mentioned above, this will be a little easier, but you also have to manually keep your phone far away from you so even text messages wonââ¬â¢t break through your concentration.Just me, those messages will still be there by the time youââ¬â¢r e done with writing.#9 Never guilt-shame yourselfThis will be very hard if, for whatever reason, you donââ¬â¢t end up hitting your word count goal daily. Youââ¬â¢ll start to shame yourself, even if only internally. This isnââ¬â¢t productive in any way, shape, or form and itââ¬â¢ll only slow you down further.Instead, you should recognize when youââ¬â¢re behind, and then schedule the time to catch up if hitting that 50,000 words is truly important to you.And if you need a little bit more to help you out with this one, just remember that no matter what, youââ¬â¢re making progress on your book and that alone is a major accomplishment.#10 Just writeNaNoWriMo is all about just making progress. That progress doesnt have to be the best version of what you can do, it just has to be progress. You can forget all about making your manuscript all shiny and perfect. Instead, just focus on pumping out those words.Write to the best of your ability given the time you have to hit th ose words. After all, the large majority of us tend to write best once we get into the groove of just writing anyway. And that means if you shut off the self-critical part of your brain for a while, you can make some major strides.#11 Go easy on yourselfCut yourself some slack. Youââ¬â¢re not perfect and writing can be very difficult. If something comes up and youââ¬â¢re not able to write for a day, just forget about it and get back on track the next.Thereââ¬â¢s no point in driving yourself crazy over missing a few thousand words because like I said above, youââ¬â¢re still making progress on your book and thatââ¬â¢s the entire point of NaNoWriMo in the first place. What to do Next Only if Youââ¬â¢re SeriousWriting a book isnââ¬â¢t for those who just choose to do it on a whim. Those people arenââ¬â¢t serious and therefore, these next steps wonââ¬â¢t help them. But if you are completely serious about writing and completing a book, we have a few next steps that will help you get there.#1 Your free trainingIf you havenââ¬â¢t taken advantage of this free training offered by Chandler Bolt, youââ¬â¢re making a mistake.

Growing and Caring for Norfolk Island Pine
Growing and Caring for Norfolk Island Pine Araucaria heterophylla, or Norfolk Island pine or Australian pine, is a southern hemisphere conifer native to the Norfolk Islands and Australia. Technically, its not a real pine. Norfolk Island Pine is one of the few conifers able to adapt to inside the home and is able to tolerate relatively low light levels. In its native habitat, this tree may reach 200 feet in height with 15-pound cones. The tree will grow outside in the United States but only in the semi-tropics of Florida. Specifics Scientific name: Araucaria heterophyllaPronunciation: air-ah-KAIR-ee-uh het-er-oh-FILL-uhCommon name(s): Norfolk Island Pine, Australian PineFamily: AraucariaceaeUSDA hardiness zones: South tip of Florida and California, zone 11Origin: not native to North AmericaUses: specimen, house plantAvailability: generally available in many areas within its hardiness range - especially during Christmas holidays. Pruning As Norfolk pine grows upward, the trunk thickens and the pine limbs increase in size. You should never cut their growing tips off and only rarely trim side branches for balance. A symmetrical look can be maintained by turning the plant regularly toward the sun. The lower branches and limbs tend to shed dry, brown needles when dehydrated and need pruning. The dry needles will not come back nor will lower limbs. These drying needles and dying limbs suggest drying out so follow watering instructions. The only maintenance pruning to be done is the removal of dead lower branches. Comments From Experts Extension Nursery Specialist Dr. Leonard Perry: If you want to invest in a houseplant with a future, buy a Norfolk Island pine. It requires minimal care, and because it grows slowly will remain small and attractive for many years indoors. Horticulturist Rosie Lerner: The Norfolk Island pine has grown in popularity as a live indoor Christmas tree. Its lush green twigs of soft needles provide a lovely backdrop for festive holiday ornaments. Moisture Norfolk pines have distinctively flat, whorled snow-flake like branches and short soft needles. They enjoy humid environments. As they age, and with the lack of humidity, the needles along the trunk will fall off. Mist spraying and a rocky moisture bed can increase humidity but never leave moisture around the roots. Just like under-watering, too much water will result in sporadic bright yellow needle clusters that come off very easily and dont come back. Check to make sure the plant is not standing in lots of water. It is actually inhibiting root water uptake, increasing root rot and, like lack of moisture is not good. These plants do best with consistency so stay on a weekly watering schedule - not too much and not too little h2o. You can get by with less during the dormant winter months. Fertilization Norfolk Island pines dont require frequent fertilization but when you do, use only at half the normal recommended rate. You can also use any complete soluble fertilizer including liquid foliar plant food applied as a mist for enhanced foliage response. Fertilize older plants every three to four months and repotted or newly purchased plants every four to six months. Try to limit the times you move your tree to aà new container as they have a weak root system which can be harmed by rough movement.à Norfolk Island pines need only be repotted every three to four years using a commercially available potting mixture. Culture Light requirement: tree grows in full sunSoil tolerances: clay; loam; sand; acidic; alkaline; well-drainedDrought tolerance: highAerosol salt tolerance: moderateSoil salt tolerance: good In Depth Although Norfolk pines provide some shade, they are not suitable for patios or terraces because they are too large and large surface roots are common. Obviously, this only applies to people growing the tree in south Florida. For the rest of us, moving a potted tree outside to partially shaded sun through spring and summer is a good thing. Many people forget how tall these trees grow. They often have an attractive pyramidal form (like a fir or spruce tree) when they are small, but they quickly grow too tall for most residential sites. They can live as a houseplant for a long time if not over-watered but rarely grow more than 5 or 6 feet tall. Growing best in full sun locations, this tree thrives on a variety of soils and is moderately salt tolerant. Young plants should be watered well, especially during periods of drought. Be sure to prune out multiple trunks or leaders as they should be grown with one central leader.ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹ Propagation is by seeds or cuttings of erect shoot tips only.

Organizational Communication Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Organizational Communication - Research Paper Example Effective communication in this case requires message, a sender, a recipient, codes to help in encoding the message, and a means of transmitting the message. If passed on well information contained in communication will encourage and promote good relations between people and entities. This therefore emphasizes the need for effective communication if the businesses are to prosper as well as have a good flow of information within the out of their confines. One of the characteristics of effective communication is the absence of conflict in response or reaction as has been captured perfectly by Katherine Miller (2008). When we talk of organizational communication, we essentially refer to the way in which companies, associations or groupings communicate with their employees, clientele as well as how departments interrelate with each other. It is also encompasses the relationship between a business and its environment, a process that enables the organization to relate with its surrounding in order to serve them with finesse (Carsten, & De Dreu, 2007). Literature Review: Effective communication in a very important tool in an organization, especially because of the way it helps in promoting good flow of information and hence relationship and performance of the business departments as they create a synergy for achieving the best results in terms of production. Organizational communication can either be internal or external. Internal communication is solely communication within the confines of the company while external is communication with other businesses or any other external entity. Effective communication leads to many positive effects and leads to good productivity. There are several ways that management can use communication to pass information. They include emails, meetings, face-to-face discussions, letters, video conferencing, conferences and telephone calls (Fredric, & Jablin 2007). Noteworthy, is the fact that some methods of message transfer are more effect ive and detailed than others and therefore appropriate to always evaluate the organization and weigh the most effective and cost efficient mode of communication for your business, and through which the company can achieve maximum profits. When the most appropriate mode of communication is used then message contained in it not only leads to its effective transfer but it also enhances a good relationship between various entities in the an organization and especially the top management and the workers. It also creates an enabling environment for the building of trust within the company workers (Miller, 2008). Communication as a process is a very dynamic and vibrant process when compared to other business processes. As a process communication changes with individuals and this is dependent on factors such as education, eloquence, target audience and the message being transmitted itself. It is therefore right to say that the sender of the message determines how the message will be underst ood and interpreted. If communication is efficient, it will get rid of events of conflicting messages or conflicting responses (Fredric, & Jablin, 2007). Successful communication at different levels of management is important in an organization in that it helps in building of relationships amongst these people. Communication between management and employee is also a very important aspect

International Business Questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
International Business Questions - Essay Example This means that the marketing and management, amongst various others, strategies they deploy address regional and local markets and not the global one per se. Within the context of the stated, and as affirmed by Stevens and Bird (2004) multinational firms perceive of the global market as a series of interconnected local and regional markets and, hence, pursue strategies which are consistent with this perspective. Hence, despite their popularly being referred to as multinational, global firms justifiably pursue inherently regional strategies. The pursuit of regional vs. global strategies is partially determined by the imperatives of balancing between globalisation and localisation. There are intense, contradictory pressures on multinational enterprises to integrate across borders as well as to respond to local pressures; that means, to pursue local strategies which address the domestic/local market and global strategies which target the international market. Indeed, were multinational firms to eschew the imperatives of adaptation to the local market and the design of strategies which address its characteristics, they would probably be perceived of as an alien entrant into the market, thereby arousing consumer resistance (Reed, 1997; Rugman, 2001). Were they, however, to pursue local/domestic or regional strategies, they would be perceived of as part of the market in question, thereby offsetting the potential for consumer resistance. In other words, and as Rugman (2001) emphasises, the success of multinational firms is pa rtially predicated on market perceptions of them as belonging to and understanding of the market in question, entailing the design of strategies which are consistent with the micro-environment. International strategies are inconsistent with the very notion of the micro-environment while regional strategies are (Roth and Morrison, 1990; Rugman, 2001). It is for this reason that multinational firms adhere to regional, as opposed to international strategies. It is important to emphasise that corporations are embracing the basic principles of globalization, as evidenced by ever increasing cross-border trade and the widening grip of MNEs on international business. It is doing so, however, within the context of regionalization. Trade laws and enthusiasm for globalisation aside, the fact is that while markets are interconnected, there is no international homogeneity of consumer tastes and market characteristics. Safarian (2003), arguing for market interconnectedness but against homogeneity, maintains that the reality of globalisation is pockets of globalisation. This means that globalisation, as in market homogeneity and interconnectedness, is only valid and present on the regional level. There is no such homogeneity, although there is interconnectedness, on the global/international level. The implication here is, as may be inferred from several scholars, is that there is simply no basis for the formulation and implementation of global marke t and marketing strategies. The global market, as in the homogeneous and interconnected one, simply does not exist (Sheth, 2001; Safarian, 2003; Rugman, 2005; Dicken, 2007). From this perspective, therefore, firms cannot pursue international/global strategies and, indeed, have no choice but to adhere to regional ones within the contex

The Perception of Change :: Transportation, Driving, Change Blindness
You can miss obvious signs while driving because your mind was wandering, listening to the radio, talking on your cell phone, or even talking to the passenger in your car. Change blindness is the difficulty noticing large changes in your visual senses that are normally easy to be seen (Simon, 2005 ). A main factor in change blindness is attention which is needed to see change (Simon, 2005). The perception of a change occurs when the attention is on the object being changed (Rensink, 1997). Changes to items in a central location are easier to detect than objects elsewhere and the objects that are in the same physical distance (Simon, 2005). Your attention can be distributed to 4-5 items at a time but only detect one change at that moment which is called change simultagnosia (Simon, 2005). Inattentional blindness was first studied by Ulric Neisser and his colleagues in the 1970s. Their study involved subjects viewing an attention-demanding task video where groups of players passing a ball. Subjects were asked to watch one group pass the ball back and forth while ignoring the other group who passed the ball. While this was taking place a woman carrying an umbrella walked through the scene which many subjected failed to notice (Simon, 2010). Simons and Chabris replicated this experiment by using a woman dressed in a gorilla suit that stopped in the middle of the video and thumped its chest for 9 seconds and only 50% of viewers noticed. The gorilla video is a well-known video on visual awareness with about 90% of people say they would notice the gorilla. A new video was later made in front of a green screen so that they could change the color of the curtain behind the event taking place. They had the gorilla walk through the scene stopped and faced the camera while he thumped his chest then left the scene. The curtain colored changed along with a player of the black team left the scene (Simons, 2010). (Beck, 2001) Detecting visual change in the environment is important and it is reported that people are poor when detecting the change during a screen flicker which causes the blindness to occur. When you divide your attention between two tasks you pay less attention to the second one than the primary task (Beck, 2001).

Difficulty Of Teaching Narrative Writing In English Class
It is an undeniable fact that narrative authorship is one of the most hard constructs to learn in an English authorship category. One of the aims of the KBSM English course of study ( 2000 ) states that pupils should be able to ââ¬Ëlisten, position, read and respond to different texts, and express thoughts, sentiments, ideas and feelings imaginatively and creatively in spoken and written signifier ââ¬Ë . Therefore, narrative authorship has become a staple inquiry in the Continuous Writing subdivision of Paper 1 for the English SPM scrutiny. Despite the 9 old ages of composing experience the pupils had, bulk of the pupils in Malaysia are still doing serious composing mistakes in their narrative essay. These mistakes are largely lingual mistakes but mistakes made in composing mechanics are every bit as damaging. Since the KBSM course of study ââ¬Ës origin, instructors all around the state and even pedagogues in universities have been seeking to order a methodological analysis on learning authorship. However, merely a little minority would turn to Computer Assisted Language Learning ( CALL ) as a possible solution and how many would really recognize that young persons of this coevals are really much technologically savvy? By working this tendency, we might be able to incorporate engineering into the schoolroom on a whole new degree, beyond the initial theories of CALL. Video games, a signifier of amusement enjoyed by young persons and grownups likewise hold a well of possible in helping linguistic communication acquisition. In this research, I will be looking at how playing a specific genre of picture games will act upon the narrative authorship accomplishments of a Malayan ESL scholar. Background of Problem Video games are a large portion of the lives of pupils all around the universe. Based on the annual hardware gross revenues statistics released by VGChartz.com, 28.4 million gambling consoles were sold as of July 2010 and 12 % of the consoles were sold in the Asiatic part ( excepting Japan ) . Additionally, The Entertainment Software Association ( 2010 ) estimated about 25 % of worldwide gamers are below 18 old ages of age. By synergizing both statistics, it has become an undeniable fact that pupils below 18 old ages of age would hold played some signifier of video game. This opened a well of possible where linguistic communication acquisition elements could be integrated into video games. Harmonizing to Salisch, Oppl and Kristen ( 2006 ) , educational games can better a kid ââ¬Ës cognition in about all topics including reading, speech production, listening and composing accomplishments in the kid ââ¬Ës native linguistic communication. Therefore, it could be said that picture g ames play a important function in enriching a scholar ââ¬Ës composing ability as video game narratives are normally narrative driven to plunge the participant into its narrative. Presently, instructors in Malaysia are still discerning about the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning tools in the schoolroom. The failure of English for the Teaching of Mathematics and Science is one of the testaments to this fact. Countless CALL courseware were developed but non to the full utilized by the instructor. Teachers in Malaysia still prefer to utilize traditional learning methods of chalk and talk over technology-aided instruction methods. The true potency of CALL has yet to be to the full tapped by English instructors in Malaysia. The ineffectualness of current English instruction methodological analysiss could possibly be that the pupils, being technologically savvy, happen the traditional lessons drilling, uninteresting and non exciting. Teachers who refuse to encompass the technological civilization of the pupils such as the Internet and video games may hold missed out on the assorted benefits these tools could potentially offer. In this survey, I will be utilizing the action-adventure picture game developed by the award winning developer, Naughty Dog Inc. , entitled ââ¬ËUNCHARTED 2: Among Thievesaââ¬Å¾? ââ¬Ë entirely for the PlayStationAà ® 3 bet oning console. This game has been dubbed as one of the best action escapade titles of all time developed for the PlayStationAà ®3 console. Harmonizing to Arne Meyer ( 2010 ) , a Community Strategist of Naughty Dog Inc, ââ¬ËUNCHARTED 2: Among Thievesaââ¬Å¾? ââ¬Ë has sold over 3.8 million transcripts worldwide and has won legion Game of The Year award. This game featured dramatic in-game events that will do the participant an active participant in the cinematic experience and its gambling engine, designed specifically for the PlayStation3 console, successfully captured human emotions for in-game portraiture. This characteristic of the game made it alone and set it apart from all the other picture games of the same genre. This research seeks to turn to some of the pressing issues in the gray country of video games and linguistic communication acquisition through extended interaction with a commercially available picture game. Can playing a picture game truly help pupils in geting certain linguistic communication accomplishment? More specifically, this research is designed to analyze larning from games by measuring what adolescents in Form 4 learn by playing an bing, off the shelf, commercially available electronic picture game: ââ¬ËUNCHARTED 2: Among Thievesaââ¬Å¾? ââ¬Ë . The game ââ¬ËUncharted 2: Among Thievesaââ¬Å¾? ââ¬Ë was developed to entertain, but can besides be used to learn narrative composing due to its immersive game drama experience and narrative construction. Problem Statement The current coevals of ESL scholars in Malaysia is turning up in an progressively technologically advanced universe. In a coevals where traditional acquisition methods are going disused, instructors of ESL would necessitate to switch their paradigms to accept modern learning methods which revolved around engineering itself. Over the past few old ages, research in Computer Assisted Language Learning ( CALL ) has been impactful and it has become an constituted fact that linguistic communication acquisition through CALL methods are really much successful in the current coevals of ESL scholars. However, advocates of CALL have yet to develop a method which specifically targets the narrative authorship ability of an ESL scholar. Research workers and instructors would hold that the narrative accomplishment is the trickiest accomplishment to learn in an ESL schoolroom as narrative authorship required a high degree of originative thought. But, many research workers failed to see an of import tool in their research: picture games. Although legion research have been done on the effects of video games on a kid ââ¬Ës psychological development and acquisition, small or none have focused on its effects on an ESL scholar ââ¬Ës narrative authorship ability, particularly in a local context. Because of this, picture games are non to the full exploited for their wealth in linguistic communication instruction. The general perceptual experience of video games in the older coevals is that picture games do non lend anything to the educational development of a kid. Video games are seen as distracting, un-educational, and unhealthy. It was frequently blamed for doing pupils to execute severely in their surveies. These misconceptions are farther aggravated by the legion researches which seemed to link picture games and violent behaviour in kids. These factors caused video games to be stigmatized and overlooked as a possible linguistic communication larning tool. However, recent surveies concluded that there are no existent correlativity between playing picture games and negative behaviour development among kids ; some kids even performed better than their non-game playing equals ( Durkin & A ; Barber, 2002 ) . It would be interesting to analyze at the extent of lingual betterment influenced by the picture game and the factors doing it as current surveies have yet to happen a solid correlativity between video game playing and narrative authorship accomplishment development. Most ESL scholars ââ¬Ë acquisition of an L2 from video games is inadvertent. This means, the games were non designed with linguistic communication acquisition as its end, instead, the game was written with the exclusive aim of plunging the participant into the narrative and doing them bury that they are really playing the game ( Dansky 2007 ) . This created a pseudo-immersion environment where the scholar ââ¬Ës L2 ( in this instance, English ) is used was the chief medium of communicating as the full game is presented in English. Professional game authors are normally incognizant of the fact that the narrative construction they applied in their game book are being subconsciously absorbed by participants to develop narrative composing constructions of their ain. Since most Malayan parents and pedagogues do non play nor understand picture games, they are non cognizant that picture games are embedded with a rich narrative construction which could be transferred to its participants . Most parents and pedagogues frequently complained that childs presents are passing excessively much clip playing video games. They felt that picture games are non relevant to a child ââ¬Ës academic advancement and that clip is better exhausted making something more productive. These sentiments stemmed from the fact that grownups are merely loath to accept the outgrowth of new engineerings and unwilling to interrupt out of the traditional ââ¬Ësafe-zones ââ¬Ë based on theories and methods which worked good over the old ages. Parents and pedagogues likewise needed to be informed on the potency of video games heightening linguistic communication acquisition and to be taught how to utilize this tool efficaciously. Once they learn to see through their kid ââ¬Ës eyes, they will eventually interrupt the stigma which plagued pictures games for old ages. There is besides a go oning confusion between edutainment package and commercial picture games. Edutainment package were designed in the 1980s and falls under type 2 of Communicative CALL. Many ESL instructors were either non positive or incognizant that edutainment package designed under the Communicative CALL stage is able to better an ESL scholar ââ¬Ës linguistic communication acquisition. Furthermore, these package are frequently expansive and were extremely dependent on progressively bettering computing machine hardware, therefore, edutainment package had been shunned by the learning community in general. Now, with the outgrowth of commercial gambling, instructors of ESL will be able to work commercial picture games to enrich their schoolroom. Hardware jobs which plagued edutainment were made disused with bet oning consoles and teachers no longer hold to obtain a licence to utilize the package in the schoolroom due to the Fair Use clause under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ( DCMA ) . ESL instructors would hold to understand that edutainment package and commercial package are separate entities and that commercial picture games are merely every bit educational as its edutainment opposite number. Besides, commercial picture games have a greater potency of heightening linguistic communication acquisition compared to edutainment package as the bulk of edutainment package focused on all topic but English and it is still designed with drill and pattern methodological analysiss in head ; an out-of-date attack in the ELT universe. Purpose of Research The intent of this research is to place the elements in the narrative construction used in action-adventure picture games in relation to general ESL narration. Apart from that, this survey besides aims to analyze the influence of action-adventure picture games in scholars of ESL ââ¬Ës narrative authorship ability. Aims of Research There are two aims in this research. It aims to: ââ¬â place the elements in the narrative construction used in action escapade picture games in relation to general ESL narration. analyze the influence of action escapade picture games in scholars of ESL ââ¬Ës narrative authorship ability. Research Questions The followers are the research inquiries that I will look into: ââ¬â what are the elements in the narrative construction used in action escapade picture games in relation to general ESL narration? how would action gamble picture games influence an ESL scholar ââ¬Ës narrative authorship ability? Blending both the gambling industry and the academic industry would open up an ocean of larning chances for both professionals to farther innovate in their Fieldss. Game interior decorators would be able to plan a game which still held true to the game design doctrine of doing games fun, prosecuting, synergistic and cinematic and at the same clip, doing the game a well of linguistic communication instruction resources for linguistic communication practicians. Language instructors may besides profit from fut ure coactions with game authors as they will be able to leave their narrative authorship cognition to be taught in schools. Apart from that, hopefully from the fruitful nature of this research, instructors of ESL would recognize that playing picture games are non merely a waste of clip. Teachers could tackle the potency of video games to integrate a picture game into the schoolroom by holding the pupils composing brooding diaries to chronicle their gambling experience and that written and unwritten assignments could be given based on the played game. Learners of ESL would no longer happen English as a drilling topic to larn as video games would excite their involvement and their acquisition of L2 may be hastened with the background cognition activated. Teachers of ESL could besides experiment with the different genres of commercial picture games available in the market to happen new dynamic resources to develop teaching stuffs and lessons. These eternal possibilities would basically take the stigmatisation of video games among instructors of ESL in Malaysia to further work the full potency of video games as an synergistic linguistic communication larning tool. Last but non least, this research would open up new possibilities and agencies of supplying meaningful and piquant content through an electronic medium, hence, broadening the range and execution of Computer Assisted Language Learning in Malaysia. CALL ââ¬Ës development in Malaysia boomed with the authorities ââ¬Ës English for the Teaching of Mathematics and Science ( ETMS ) . But, it is once more put on a dead clasp as the authorities reversed the policy in 2009. This research, if done right, would be able to kick get down CALL ââ¬Ës development in Malaysia and perchance launch Malaysia into video game design. Once the learning community recognized the potency of commercial picture games, game developers in Malaysia would derive the motive to bring forth high quality games which are suited to the Malaysian context, retaining the really aspects which made commercially successful picture games fun and prosecuting, at the same clip imbued with educational ends as stated in the National Education Philosophy. Restrictions of Research. As this is a little graduated table research, it is bound to hold its restrictions. This research uses an experimental research design with a purposive sampling method ; choosing merely 5 respondents, the consequences derived from this survey might non stand for the general population. This is due to the hardware restriction of the survey which merely allows for 2 PlayStationAà ®3 console to be used throughout the 6 hebdomad survey ( budget constrains ) , restricting the figure of participants in order to run into the 6 hebdomad period. Besides, this research will merely be taking in Form 4 male pupils of Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar ( English College ) JB, therefore, the effects of the picture game would hold on female pupils could non be done due to the gender choice. Last, I ââ¬Ëm concentrating merely on the construction of the narrative essay produced by the respondents. So, this research would non be able to find the effects of video game in other countries of linguistic communic ation larning such as vocabulary acquisition, grammar sweetening, unwritten accomplishments etc. Definition of Footings Action-adventure games Action-adventure gamesA combine elements of their two constituent genres, action and escapade.
